The History Of Blythe Dolls

In 1972, the Blythe doll was born, a beautiful doll with colour changing eyes! However by early 1973 it was decided by the manufacturer (Kenner) to stop production. This was mainly because certain executives at Kenner thought that the dolls eyes could be scary for some children.

In early 2000 a New York based photographer (Gina Garan) decided to take pictures of her treasured original ‘Blythe’ Dolls in various locations around New York. She include them in a coffee table book called ‘This Is Blythe’. The book was a huge success, selling over 100,000 copies, the book is still in print today.

Due to the new found interest in these beautiful dolls, a Japanese toy company called Takara decided to licence the design rights for ‘Blythe Dolls’ and start manufacturing the dolls again.

Blythe Dolls now have a huge ‘cult’ following around the world, particularly in Japan and North America. ‘Blythe’ Dolls sell for between $150 and $1,000 each and numerous Japanese and Korean Companies have used ‘Blythe Dolls’ for television and print advertising.

In 2009 Alexander McQueen used ‘Blythe Dolls’ as part of his association with ‘Target’ in America and New York was filled with giant Billboards of Blythe Dolls! Last year Coca-Cola used a similar type of doll to the ‘Blythe Doll’ in their latest ‘Diet Coke’ campaign.

Now, in 2011, Kitten D’Amour launch their very own range of genuine ‘Blythe Doll’s’ as ‘D’Amour Dolls’.

Each ‘D’Amour Doll’ is lovingly created from an original ‘Blythe Doll’ by Alana Smith the designer of all of Kitten D’Amour’s beautiful designs. Each doll is totally unique, with her very own make up, hair design and of course Kitten D’Amour outfit!

As each ‘D’Amour Doll’ is unique, we will only be making a very small quantity of each design. A great deal of love, care and attention goes into creating each ‘D’Amour Doll’ and we will only be creating a very limited number of Dolls each year.

We hope to sell the ‘D’Amour’ Dolls’ in the boutiques and on-line as soon as possible, we will feature pictures of each doll on our Facebook Page and Web Site as each doll is finished.
